MITCHELL B. LOWENSTEIN, MD
Mitchell Lowenstein, MD is board certified in Rheumatology and Internal Medicine. He received his undergraduate education at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania and his medical degree from the University of Connecticut in Farmington. His further medical training included an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond as well as a fellowship in Rheumatology at the University of Connecticut in Farmington.
Dr. Lowenstein holds staff privileges at Mease Morton Plant /Clearwater, Dunedin and Countryside as well as Helen Ellis Hospital in Tarpon Springs. He also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of South Florida School of Medicine. He has been intensely involved in clinical research for over 22 years. He has published many scientific papers related to Rheumatology.
Dr. Lowenstein is a fellow of both the American College of Rheumatology and the American College of Physicians (Internal Medicine). This requires both board certifications in Rheumatology and Internal Medicine and to have published reports of his medical research. As an active participant of the medical community, he is a member of the Florida Medical Association, Pinellas County Medical Society and the local Arthritis Foundation. He is chairman of the Institutional Review Board at Mease Hospital.
He resides in Palm Harbor with his wife and children. His avocational passion is jazz piano and he has a band called “Transitions”. They play for many charitable events, parties and in jazz clubs. He also enjoys long distance cycling.
KAREN RENDT-ZAGAR, MD
Karen E. Zagar, MD is a native of
Pennsylvania, where she attended college (majoring in mathematics and chemistry
at Clarion State College) and attended medical school (University of
Pennsylvania in Philadelphia). She
remained at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for her internship
and residency in Internal Medicine. She
did her fellowship in Rheumatology at Duke University in Durham, North
Carolina.
Dr. Zagar comes to Florida having spent
the previous six years on the staff of the Department of Rheumatic and
Immunologic Diseases at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland,
Ohio. There she served as the Fellowship
Education Program Director to train physicians specializing in Rheumatology.
She was also a member of the Center for Vasculitis
Care and Research, headed by Dr. Gary Hoffman, and has participated in numerous
clinical trials related to osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and
vasculitis.
Dr. Zagar is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Rheumatology, and she is a
fellow in the American College of Rheumatology.
Dr. Zagar and her family enjoy numerous outdoor activities, particularly sailing, biking,
and gardening. She also plays flute and classical piano.
MEET OUR ARTHRITIS NURSE SPECIALISTS:
DONNA ADAMS, a registered Nurse with board certification in Rehabilitation Nursing, joined Dr. Lowenstein in 1988. She is a clinical Nurse Specialist in Rheumatology with advanced training from the University of Tennessee. She interned as a Rheumatology Nurse Coordinator with the Appalachian Arthritis Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the first such center in a rural area of its kind.
In coordination with Dr. Lowenstein, Donna provides patient care and is involved in arthritis patient education.
She lives with her husband Russ Adams, owner and operator of Dunedin Screening in Dunedin, Florida. She is a member of the American Nurses Association of Rheumatology Health Professionals and the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses.
MEG S. ALLEN
is an advanced registered nurse practitioner who has specialized in the care and treatment of rheumatology patients since 1991. She graduated in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing
from Villanova University in suburban Philadelphia. She graduated in 1991 as an advanced registered nurse practitioner with a master’s of science degree in nursing from the University of South
Florida. She was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International honor society of nursing in 1990.
Meg joined the Arthritis Center in August, 2007 she has a very close-knit family, 4 cats and one son…..and enjoys playing competitive softball and riding her bike on the Pinellas trail.
